Heavy-Duty Class D Gas and Airtight Access Solution for Large Trade Waste Recovery Pit
The Project
The Bellevue Railcar Maintenance Facility required a robust, purpose-built access solution for a large three-section trade waste recovery pit.
Working with ADCO Constructions and Triple T Contracting, our team was engaged to manufacture and supply 10 custom cover slabs, engineered to meet the demanding requirements of this major infrastructure application.
The project commenced in November 2024, with the final slab marking the culmination of an extensive manufacturing and delivery program.
The Challenge
A trade waste recovery pit of this scale requires more than heavy-duty load capacity. The access system also needs to help contain the pit environment and prevent unwanted gases and odours from escaping into the surrounding facility.
The final slab presented a particularly substantial engineering and manufacturing challenge. Measuring 6.0 metres × 4.2 metres and weighing approximately 18.2 tonnes, it needed to achieve Class D load performance while incorporating multiple access points into a single precast structure.
The Solution
The final custom Class D cover slab incorporated three MFD1212 cast iron concrete infill access covers, cast directly into the slab to create an integrated heavy-duty access solution.
Importantly for the trade waste application, the MFD1212 covers are designed to be gas, air and watertight. This sealing capability helps prevent gases and odours generated within the trade waste recovery pit from escaping through the access points, while also helping prevent surface water from entering the pit.
Combining this sealing performance with heavy-duty cast iron construction made the MFD1212 Concrete Infill Covers particularly well suited to the facility, where reliable access, load performance and containment were all key considerations.
The Result
The delivery of the 18.2-tonne final slab completed a series of 10 purpose-built slabs supplied for the trade waste recovery pit.
The project demonstrates the value of integrating heavy-duty access covers with custom precast infrastructure from the outset. By casting three MFD1212 covers directly into the final Class D slab, the completed system provides secure and practical maintenance access while helping maintain a sealed environment within the trade waste recovery pit.
From the scale of the precast elements to the gas, air and watertight access covers, each component was selected and manufactured around the specific demands of the application.
