Civil and Infrastructure
Since 1920, Mascot Engineering has been at the forefront of Australia’s civil and infrastructure industry. We specialise in the manufacture of AS3996:2019 compliant in-ground products engineered for longevity and ease of installation.Â
From major road upgrades to community precincts, our technical team provides custom-engineered solutions including heavy-duty access covers, multipart gas-tight lids, and large-scale drainage pits. Additionally, our signature Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) range offers the structural integrity of traditional concrete with the lightweight handling required for fast-paced urban development.
Not only do we have a huge range of pits and enclosures, with our local in-house capabilities to assemble multipart covers (gas and air tight inspection covers) with fixed or removable beams we’re one of the most experienced manufacturers of custom access covers in Australia.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions: Civil & Infrastructure
Q1: Are Mascot Engineering products compliant with the latest Australian Standards?
A: Yes. All our access covers and grates are manufactured and tested to meet AS3996:2019. This ensures that our infrastructure products provide the necessary safety and performance for Australian road, rail, and urban projects. We provide technical data sheets and NATA-certified test results upon request to assist with site approvals.
Q2: What are the primary advantages of GRC pits over traditional precast concrete?
A: Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) offers the strength of traditional concrete but at approximately 80% less weight. This significantly reduces the need for heavy lifting equipment on-site, lowers transport costs, and speeds up installation. Unlike traditional concrete, Mascot GRC does not require steel reinforcement (eliminating corrosion risk), and allows for easy on-site pipe penetrations without core drilling.
Q3: How do I determine the correct load class for my infrastructure project?
A: Load classes are determined by the type of traffic the area will receive. Under AS3996, the common classes for civil projects are:
Class B (80kN): Residential driveways and footways.
Class D (240kN): Roads, highways, and areas accessible by heavy commercial vehicles.
Class G (900kN): Extreme loads, such as airport taxiways and high-density container wharves.
Q4: Can Mascot provide custom-engineered pits for non-standard civil requirements?
A: Absolutely. While we have a vast range of standard sizes, our local manufacturing capabilities allow us to produce custom precast concrete enclosures. We also specialise in multipart access covers with removable beams, designed to provide clear openings for large-scale utility maintenance while maintaining structural integrity.
Q5: What is the maximum depth allowance for Mascot GRC pits in civil applications?
A: Our GRC pits are engineered for durability and are approved for installation to depths of up to 5 metres, depending on the specific product and site conditions. Because our GRC is manufactured with a high-density cementitious matrix, it maintains its shape and integrity under significant soil pressure without the need for additional concrete encasement in most typical installations.
