Measuring a huge 6m by 4m and just under 3m in depth, this large custom precast cable pit was quite a sight on the streets of the CBD.
The custom concrete pit was manufactured to Novo Rail and Transport for NSW project specific requirements complete with retractable ladders for easy access and cast in drainage sump in the floor. A Class D multipart access cover complete with removable beams to allow for a full clear opening using Mascot Access Covers was cast into the pit in one pour to ensure product integrity.
Transported out of hours with accompanying pilot vehicles front and rear due to oversize travel restrictions, the big pit travelled on a pre-planned RMS approved route. The transport and arrival timing was coordinated with the onsite cranes installation schedule to minimise the impact to surrounding residents and businesses.
The pit included certified and tested lifting points to ensure the crane lift and install went smoothly… it drew quite a crowd for 2am on a Sunday. This 33Kv feeder pit is part of the Sydney Trains power supply infrastructure upgrade from Surry Hills to Central Station – more power will allow them to offer more services. Below you’ll find a link to a video produced by Transport for NSW explaining the project whilst featuring our pit being installed (between 12 and 17 seconds).
