Patented Griptech Grating at Fitzroy Gardens

A custom Griptech® grating solution at Melbourne’s Fitzroy Gardens addressed two challenges: improving a heavily used pedestrian surface and preventing debris from entering the water reticulation system.

The existing multi-part grate was identified as non-compliant, while its openings allowed litter to pass through and contaminate the water. The Orca team designed and supplied replacement Griptech grating with bar gaps reduced to 3mm, helping exclude cigarette butts while retaining openings for water flow.

The custom grating combined a heel-safe surface with P5 slip resistance, providing added grip underfoot in a prominent public space. The project demonstrated how Griptech could be tailored to solve specific site problems.

Griptech’s versatility extends well beyond drainage grates. Available in galvanised or stainless steel, the patented system can be configured for walkways, ramps, platforms, tree surrounds and other public spaces. Its heelproof design and P5 slip resistance in both directions make it well suited to areas used by pedestrians, wheelchair users, cyclists and families with prams.

At Mascot Engineering, we welcome projects that call for a custom approach. From panel dimensions and layouts to bar spacing and material selection, our team can work with designers and engineers to develop Griptech solutions around the application’s requirements.

This project formed part of Orca’s established project history before the brand joined Mascot Engineering. Griptech is now part of the Mascot Engineering range, bringing specialist grating design and custom manufacturing expertise to our broader offering.
