Surry Hills Village & Wunderlich Lane

The Surry Hills Village & Wunderlich Lane precinct, developed by TOGA Group and designed by SJB with collaborators including Studio Prineas and ASPECT Studios, is a major mixed-use redevelopment on the border of Surry Hills and Redfern.

The $250 million precinct transforms a former shopping centre site into a vibrant inner-city destination featuring residential apartments, retail, hospitality, commercial space, and public domain areas centred around the pedestrian laneway, Wunderlich Lane.

A key feature of the project is the careful integration of heritage architecture with contemporary urban design, including the restoration and reuse of the historic Bank of NSW building that anchors the precinct.

Large mixed-use developments require infrastructure solutions that balance functionality, durability and aesthetics within high-quality public environments.

At Surry Hills Village, surface access points needed to integrate seamlessly into premium paving and landscape treatments throughout the laneways and public spaces. In heritage areas, infrastructure elements also had to respect the architectural character of the surrounding historic structures while maintaining gas-tight performance and safe access to services below.

Mascot Engineering supplied Paver Infill Gastight Covers and Frames for use throughout the precinct.

Designed to integrate with surrounding paving finishes, these covers allow the selected surface material to be installed within the frame, ensuring service access points blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and pedestrian areas.

Within the heritage-listed section of the development, the paver infill solution enabled the access covers to remain visually discreet while complementing the historic character of the site. This approach helped maintain the architectural integrity of the heritage facade and surrounding public realm.

Key product benefits included:

  • Seamless integration with architectural paving finishes
  • Gastight sealing to protect underground services
  • Durable construction suited to high-traffic urban environments
  • Clean, unobtrusive access points for essential infrastructure

Mascot Engineering’s Paver Infill Gastight Covers and Frames contributed to the delivery of a refined public realm within Surry Hills Village.

By combining practical service access with architectural integration, the covers helped maintain the high-quality streetscape and laneway environment that defines Wunderlich Lane while supporting the complex infrastructure requirements of a major mixed-use precinct.

Today, Surry Hills Village stands as a new urban landmark in Sydney’s inner city, blending heritage character with contemporary architecture and public spaces designed for community life.
