FAQ

Q1: Does Mascot Engineering supply pits compliant with NBN and other major authorities?

A: Yes. We stock a complete range of NBN-compliant plastic cable pits (P-series) and heavy duty lightweight GRC alternatives. Our products are widely used and approved by major telecommunications and energy authorities across Australia. We also provide covers with specific utility markings—including “Electricity,” “Communications,” and “NBN”—to meet site identification requirements.

Q2: How do I make conduit entries in a Mascot GRC cable pit?

A: One of the primary advantages of Mascot GRC is the ease of installation. Unlike traditional concrete, our pits do not require pipe entries to be pre-cre drilled prior to delivery. Conduit entries can be made by the installer on site anywhere on the pit wall using a simple ball-pein hammer (the “quick knock” method) or a core drill. This allows for precise alignment with your trenching depth without compromising the pit’s structural integrity.

Q3: Are Mascot cable pits suitable for high-voltage (HV) electrical installations?

A: Absolutely. For high-voltage and high-density cable hauls, we recommend our Coreworx Segmented Joint Bays. These are designed specifically for the energy sector to house HV/LV cabling. For standard trafficable areas, our GRC pits can be paired with Class B to G access covers (AS3996:2019) to ensure that sensitive electrical infrastructure is protected from heavy vehicle loads.

Q4: Can I secure the pits against unauthorized access?

A: Yes. Security is paramount for communications networks. We offer several locking solutions, including boltdown lids, padlockable checkerplate covers, and high-security utility covers. These systems are designed to prevent tampering and copper theft while ensuring that authorized maintenance crews can still gain access using standard lifting keys.

Q5: What is the benefit of using GRC over plastic pits for electrical work?

A: While plastic pits are excellent for light-duty and residential applications, Mascot GRC pits provide superior durability for trafficable environments. GRC is not brittle, will not shatter, and offers much higher resistance to ground movement and soil pressure. Additionally, GRC is naturally non-conductive and fire-resistant, providing an extra layer of safety for electrical jointing and cable storage compared to polymer-only alternatives.
